YOUNG LUNGS AT PLAY

When a parent smokes around their child, they are not only hurting their own health, but damaging their child's health in the process. According to the American Lung Association every year more than 41,000 people in the U.S. die from secondhand smoke exposure. Children, pregnant women, older people and people with heart or breathing problems like asthma or COPD are at greatest risk, but even healthy people should avoid secondhand smoke. Children's behaviors are influenced by those around them. It is possible that if they see a role model using tobacco, they in turn will view smoking as acceptable and likely become a daily smoker, further damaging their health and polluting our parks.

Municipalities, school districts, youth sports organizations and other groups are invited to join the Pennsylvania Department of Health and partnering agencies in eliminating children’s exposure to secondhand smoke at public parks and playgrounds.  Policy initiatives are key strategies in influencing community norms and effective ways to limit exposure to the dangers of secondhand smoke.  This initiative protects the environment and protects the health of all.  We will support you as you work to create tobacco-free parks and playgrounds. For more information, visit Young Lungs at Play's website.
